WCWS Championship Series Set: Texas vs Texas Tech in Lone Star Showdown

OKLAHOMA CITY — For the first time in Women’s College World Series history, the national championship will come down to two Texas programs. The Texas Longhorns and the Texas Tech Red Raiders are set to face off in a best-of-three series beginning Wednesday night, each looking to bring home their program’s first-ever softball national title.

The Longhorns enter with experience and unfinished business. After falling to Oklahoma in recent championship appearances, Texas returns to the WCWS finals with a renewed sense of focus. Freshman pitcher Teagan Kavan has been a breakout force, dominating opponents with a 0.41 ERA through the tournament. Her clutch performance helped Texas earn its first WCWS win over the Sooners earlier in the week. Catcher Reese Atwood, one of the most feared bats in the country, looks to break out after a quiet start in Oklahoma City.

Texas Tech’s road to the championship has been anything but expected. Under first-year head coach Gerry Glasco, the Red Raiders shocked the softball world with a 3–2 walk-off win over Oklahoma, ending the Sooners’ historic four-year title streak. NiJaree Canady, a transfer from Stanford and the nation’s top pitcher statistically, has thrown every pitch for Tech in the WCWS and continues to deliver under pressure. Lauren Allred’s game-winning sacrifice fly to eliminate OU sealed the deal and cemented Tech’s place in the finals.

The two teams met twice in February, with Texas winning both games, including an 11–0 run-rule win. But the stakes are far higher now, and both teams enter the series with momentum and confidence.

Game 1 is set for Wednesday, June 4 at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN. Game 2 will be played Thursday, with a potential Game 3 scheduled for Friday. One thing is guaranteed: the WCWS trophy is coming back to Texas.
